A graduate of HEC (1978) and ENA (1980–1982) with a PhD in law, Jean-Louis Bancel has served as Chairman of Crédit Coopératif since 2009 (and Vice Chairman from 2005 to 2009), Chairman of the International Cooperative Banking Association (a sectorial organization of the International Co-operative Alliance), and a member of ANC, France’s accounting standards authority. Jean-Louis Bancel worked in the Insurance Department of France’s Economy and Finance Ministry. He has been a very active member of the French Treasury, where he has held a variety of positions, including as Head of Development Activities for Africa and Chief of Staff of the Minister for Consumer Affairs.
Before turning to banking, Jean-Louis Bancel was active in the insurance mutual sector as CEO of Fédération Nationale de la Mutualité Française (1977 to 2004) and General Secretary of Groupement des Entreprises Mutuelles d’Assurance (1993 to 1997). He is currently Chairman of Mutuelle Centrale des Finances.
